Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

Collated (March 2020). This fragment stems from a thick tablet: the max preserved thickness is 38 mm, and based on the curvature the original max thickness must have been at least 5 cm. It preserves portions of the upper half of the obverse as well as the lower half of the reverse. It is written in a tiny cursive script with shallow impressions, a conspicuous inclination of the aperture angle of vertical wedges, vertical wedges slanting to the left, and a remarkable tendency of the lines of the script to raise from left to right. The handwriting is identical to that of KBo 13.250 and KBo 26.151, and an indirect join with the latter fragment (q.v.) is possible.

The text contains the description of seasonal festivals, one of which seemingly led to a stelae sanctuary on a mountain (rev. 6′). Noteworthy is the purification (?) rite by means of a billy-goat referred to in rev. 5′.

Palaeography and orthography: Cursive script. Note the variation in the spelling of the word for “stela” (logographic in rev. 7′-8′, phonetic in rev. 10′), and the spelling a-danx-zi (obv. 5′) vs. pé-e-da-an-zi (rev. 7′).
